Ovalbumin with Glycated Carboxyl Groups Shows Membrane-Damaging Activity

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether glycated ovalbumin (OVA) showed novel activity at the lipid-water interface. Mannosylated OVA (Man-OVA) was prepared by modification of the carboxyl groups with p-aminophenyl α-dextro (d)-mannopyranoside. An increase in the number of modified carboxyl groups increased the membrane-damaging activity of Man-OVA on cell membrane-mimicking ves...

Freezing injury and resistance in spinach chloroplast grana.

Spinach grana appear to be injured by the same mechanism and by the same degree of dehydration and volume reduction that injures animal cells. Winter-hardened or artificially protected grana avoid injury by permitting a reversible influx of solute which forestalls excessive dehydration and shrinkage.

Carotenoid composition of spinach chloroplast grana and stroma lamellae.

Stroma lamellae and grana stacks prepared by French press rupture of spinach (Spinacia oleracea) chloroplasts contain similar amounts of beta-carotene on a protein basis. The grana fraction has considerably more xanthophylls than does the stroma fraction. Total carotenoid to chlorophyll ratios are similar for both fractions.

Carboxyl Groups in Carbohydrate-concanavalin a Interaction

I. The role of carboxyl groups in the binding of specific carbohydrates to concanavalin A, the phytohemagglutinin of the jack bean, has been studied using two techniques: (I) H + titration in the presence and absence of methyl a-D-mannopyranoside, a specifically bound carbohydrate ligand and (2) chemical modification of the protein carboxyl groups employing glycine methyl ester and a water-solu...

Carboxyl groups at the membrane interface as molecular targets for local anesthetics.

The interaction of the tertiary amine drugs chlorpromazine and dibucaine in their cationic form with carboxyl groups at the membrane surface is studied at concentrations relevant to anesthesia. Spin-labeled stearic acid is used both to provide the carboxyl groups and to monitor binding and ionization behavior in egg lecithin liposomes. Membrane anesthetic concentrations are spectrophotometrical...
